When I received a call from Richard Mille during this year's Geneva Motor Show, inviting me to join their team, I was certain of one thing—the upcoming watch would not go unnoticed. While it would certainly incorporate numerous material innovations, it was almost certain that it wouldn't be for everyone. The new RM 11-03 certainly lives up to that expectation.

Richard Mille and McLaren Automotive, who partnered last year, have created their first collaborative timepiece. Designed by McLaren's Design Director Rob Melville and Richard Mille engineer Fabrice Namura, the watch will initially be available to McLaren Ultimate Series customers. If you purchase a McLaren car, you'll receive priority access to the same watch (unfortunately, you cannot currently purchase the watch separately, at least not yet). The watch is powered by the RMAC3 automatic movement, first introduced in 2016, featuring a flyback chronograph function and a 55-hour power reserve.

Why is this watch so important?

Besides being the first collaboration between the two companies, the watch itself is a masterpiece. When two performance-oriented institutions join forces, the final result is inevitably an ultimate creation. From a design perspective, the RM 11-03 draws inspiration from McLaren's classic sports cars. For example, the titanium pushers resemble the headlights of the McLaren 720S; the titanium inserts are similar in shape to the air intakes of a McLaren F1 car; and the complex Grade 5 titanium crown is designed in the shape of a McLaren wheel (the McLaren logo is adorned at the 6 o'clock position on the bezel).

The case is crafted from a blend of carbon fiber TPT and orange quartz TPT; TPT stands for Thin Layer Technology, a layering method for carbon fiber first introduced by Richard Mille in 2013. The deeper layers are carbon fiber, while the magma-orange layers are silica fibers (orange, of course, is McLaren's signature color).

While I personally don't appreciate the design aesthetically, I think the use of high-tech materials is commendable. Richard Mille has created entirely new baseplates and bridges for the RM 11-03 McLaren watch, all made of PVD-treated Grade 5 titanium (designed to improve the performance of the gear train), which is truly impressive.

Those familiar with the RM11-02 Ceramic and RM11-02 NPTP will notice the addition of a pusher at 9 o'clock (for setting a second time zone), and start/stop and reset functions for the chronograph at 2 and 5 o'clock, respectively. Like all Richard Mille movements, the RMAC3 movement undergoes meticulous hand-beveling and polishing. The dial features an annual calendar and an oversized date display, as well as 12-hour chronograph and countdown subdials, with yellow accents on the hour markers. If this is just the beginning, it's hard to imagine the future direction of these two watches.

This collection offers several timepieces, all featuring polished stainless steel cases in 44mm and 32mm diameters (men's and women's models). The cases are finished with a black, chocolate, or blue PVD coating. The crown is positioned at 4 o'clock, similar to the design of some dive watches.

This technology, developed by the French manufacturer, is designed to absorb shocks and vibrations, ensuring the reliable operation of the automatic mechanical movement (2824) even under the most extreme conditions, such as those often encountered during sailing.

Furthermore, this is the first time BRM has used Hypalon material to make watch straps. This synthetic rubber material boasts excellent water resistance, tear resistance, and weather resistance,

and is primarily used in the manufacture of diving suits and life jackets. Therefore, Hypalon is undoubtedly the ideal choice for this new collection!
